Guild Survival by Server Type

Once we saw the guild member churn difference between server types, we wanted to go back and look at whether there might be a guild survival difference across the server types. We first tabulated all the guilds from the first 10 days in December. Then we tabulated all the guilds from the first 10 days of January. We then checked whether guilds in the first list appeared in the second list. Finally, we compared the data amongst the server types.

And we did find a difference. The guild survival rate on PvP servers was significantly lower than the rates on RP and PvE servers. This is most evident with guilds in the 2-75 size range. For example, with guilds that have between 11-35 members, the survival likelihood on RP and PvE servers is around 92%, and it is 80% on PvP servers.

As we mentioned in the earlier post about guild churn, it isn’t clear whether the PvP environment or personality differences are driving these differences. But these two posts together do make it clear that guilds on PvP servers have more churn and are less likely to survive.

Server Sample: RP (High), PvE (High), PvE (High), PvP (High), PvP (High)
Sampling Period: First 10 days of December and first 10 days of January.
Sampling Resolution: ~12 minutes
Parsing Method: The sample unit is each unique guild with a guild size greater than 1.
Data Filter: None
Sample Size: 4,132 guilds
